That 10 km assumes clean glass between two modules. Patch panels, splices and chambers all draw on the same optical budget, so if your route runs anywhere near that length it deserves a loss test rather than an assumption.

Your choice between S and M is decided by the fiber already in the ground. Nothing about the module, the port or the converter changes that answer, and it is not a performance choice.
You want that from the record rather than by eye. The as-built drawing, meaning the record of what was actually installed, or the label on the fiber itself will say OS1 or OS2 for single-mode and OM3 or OM4 for multimode, and whatever sits at the far end of that same run has to carry the matching letter.
If the installed fiber is multimode, order the 10G SFP Module-M instead. It runs 850 nm on a 50/125 µm core and reaches 300 m, which covers most of what you do inside a single building.
