What is the NovaStar 10G SFP Module-M?

If a 10G optical port on your converter or controller has stopped passing light, the NovaStar 10G SFP Module-M is the part that goes back into it. It is the multimode optical transceiver that turns your electrical data into 850 nm light and back, and it is what decides whether your port speaks multimode or single-mode.

You are buying a spare here, not an addition to your system. NovaStar fits optical modules at the factory in the CVT10, CVT10 Pro and CVT4K converters, so a new converter arrives ready to patch. The letter on the end of the name matters more than anything else on your order. A multimode module will not light a single-mode link, and both ends of your fiber run have to carry the same type.

If you order by port shape, the wrong module turns up, because the single-mode part looks identical and seats just as well. This is the 850 nm build for OM3 or OM4 twin-core fiber with a 50/125 µm core on LC connectors. Its documented reach in a NovaStar converter is 300 m.

One spare covers both ends of the link

A converter at each end of your fiber run means two modules of the same type, and they fail at the same rate. One shelf spare serves either position, which is why it is worth carrying even when your system holds only a single converter pair.

Which devices take a 10G multimode module

The third column is the one to look at before you order. Most of these arrive populated, so a module order is usually a spare or a replacement rather than a missing part.

Two families do not take this module at all. The CVT8-5GM uses a 40G module on an MPO connector, and NovaStar’s ST 2110 input cards call for SFP28 or QSFP28 transceivers. Neither is a 10G SFP, so nothing on this page will fit them.

M or S: how to be sure before ordering

You read the M or the S off the device, not off the port. Your two options share the LC connector and the same cage, so a look at them tells you nothing useful.

Three things settle it, and they have to agree. Your converter or controller model carries the letter in its own name, your installed fiber is either OM3 or OM4 multimode or OS1 or OS2 single-mode, and the equipment at the far end of your run carries the same letter as this end.

If the fiber in your building is single-mode, order the 10G SFP Module-S instead. It is the 1310 nm build for a 9/125 µm core, and it reaches 10 km rather than 300 m.

If you are building a link from nothing, settle the fiber first and let it choose your modules. Fiber is the part that gets buried, and the part nobody wants to pull twice.

When you need a 10G SFP Module-M

You buy a 10G SFP Module-M for a reason rather than as part of a first order, because your converters arrive with their optical ports already populated. Four reasons come up.

One rule covers all four. Your spare has to carry the same letter as the converter it goes into, because a multimode module cannot light a single-mode link.
