What is the NovaStar CVT4K-S?

If your screen sits far from the control room and is not allowed to go dark, the NovaStar CVT4K-S is the fiber converter for it. It lands sixteen Neutrik Gigabit Ethernet ports at the end of a single-mode fiber route up to 10 km, with a backup optical path for each working one and two power supplies in the chassis.

You see it in stadium bowls, airports and civic sites, where your media suite is in one building, the wall is somewhere across the site, and the fiber between them was laid by somebody else years ago.

Ports and optics work in either direction, so when your controller has no optical output of its own, you put one CVT4K-S at each end and the link is complete.

Sixteen ports that survive a 10 km route

You normally give something up on a long route: fewer ports at the far end, or a second equipment room to feed them. The CVT4K-S keeps all sixteen Gigabit ports at 10 km on 1310 nm single-mode fiber. Your screen gets its full port count and the project does not gain a building.

A backup pair only counts if it takes a different duct

Your two fiber pairs, pulled through the same trench, are one fiber pair as far as an excavator is concerned. That is how most protected links quietly stop being protected. OPT3 backs up OPT1 and OPT4 backs up OPT2, so you get real protection only when your second pair takes a separate route end to end. Same trench, same outage.

Single-mode all the way, jumpers included

You cannot spot the difference: single-mode and multimode jumpers share the LC connector and mate perfectly, so a wrong lead in a patch panel shows up as a dead link, not an obvious mistake. Every fiber in your CVT4K-S route is 9/125 µm OS1 or OS2 on LC, from the buried run to the short jumper in the rack.

Two supplies at a position nobody can reach quickly

Your converter sits on the far side of the site, where a failed power supply is a small part and a long drive. The CVT4K-S runs dual redundant supplies and takes both a 3-pin inlet and a PowerCON, so you can feed it from two distribution paths. A dead supply becomes a part you replace, not a black wall.

The 377.0 mm depth is the figure to measure against your far-end rack before you order. Remote equipment rooms are often fitted with shallow cabinets that this chassis will not sit in.

What a protected 16-port link actually costs

You buy protection in fiber and power feeds, not in converters. The chassis makes each level possible; your site decides which one you can afford.

The last column is the one you want to read first. Each level takes away one named failure and leaves you the rest, which tells you more about what your money is buying than a feature count does.

If your wall is not allowed to go dark at all, order a second converter at the screen rather than more fiber into one. Nothing inside a single chassis protects you against that chassis.

How far will a CVT4K-S reach?

Your CVT4K-S will reach 10 km on OS1 or OS2 single-mode fiber at 1310 nm, measured across the glass between two optical ports.

How many fibers does a full sixteen-port link need?

A full sixteen-port link needs two fiber pairs to carry all sixteen ports, and four pairs if you want them protected. OPT1 takes ports 1 to 8 and OPT2 takes ports 9 to 16.

Do OPT3 and OPT4 add capacity?

No, OPT3 and OPT4 add no capacity. They are backups for OPT1 and OPT2, and they carry no additional ports. Sixteen is your ceiling however many optical ports you patch.

Can it run on multimode fiber?

No, not on multimode fiber. The fitted modules are 1310 nm single-mode for a 9/125 µm core, so if your route is multimode you want the CVT4K-M, which reaches 300 m.

Is a second CVT4K-S needed at the controller?

You need a second CVT4K-S at the controller only when that controller has no optical port of its own. Where it carries single-mode 10G optics, one CVT4K-S at the screen completes your link.

Does the backup pair have to run separately?

Yes, your backup pair has to run separately for it to be worth anything. Two pairs in one duct fail together, so your protection level depends on the groundwork rather than on the converter.

What happens if one power supply fails?

If one power supply fails, the other carries the chassis on its own. Both inlets are live options, a 3-pin socket and a PowerCON, so you can bring the two feeds from separate distribution paths.

How much rack depth does it need?

It needs 377.0 mm of rack depth, on a 482.6 mm width and 96.0 mm height at 4.6 kg. Shallow remote cabinets often will not take it.
